I hate Windows. (My computer issues)

Don't cry over spilt milk. IE and AIM are a joke by all accounts. It's time to look into alternatives. Firefox and GAIM work wonders.
If you're deadset on keeping IE and AIM, which I do NOT recommend, you should keep up with all the latest firewall technology and antivirus updates. Both are about as secure as a locked door that's been left unlatched.
Totally right, AIM is the worst service to probably have mainly because of all the viruses that travel through it. If you go into your control panel and just remove the program and then refresh it with a new download you should be fine. If not if you had Antispyware have it search the folders that have to deal with AIM associated products and it should find exactly what your looking for. Then just delete the problams. If that doesn't work best bet is a fresh start.

...at least try the solution I linked to above, before doing anything "irrational".

you can try it... but it's tough to fix a registry issue.. especially if you are unfamilia with it... a format and fresh install takes an hour tops, and it's like having a brand new computer.. so why not?

Start > Run > "msconfig" > Startup Tab > Disable All Button > Services Tab > Hide Non-MS Services Checkbox > Uncheck Remaining Items > Apply > Okay > Restart

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove > Uninstall AIM > http://www.aim.com > Download > Restart

Install AIM

lol. viruses are executables. for instance, if I bake a poisoned cupcake, and you eat it, you might get a virus. If I whisper 'poisoned cupcake' in your ear, you're probably not going to get sick.

The point of this analogy? You're not getting a virus unless you're executing a poisoned cupcake. I mean program.

Well, I've switched to FF and GAIM...and I can't say I miss the old programs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Much better.

However, there still are some quirks, like Windows Explorer hanging sometimes and restarting, so I'm probably going to have to do an XP reinstall. The CD's being 200 miles away back home, of course //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

do you need an xp image?

Before my last clean install i was having some retarded problems with IE and it was ****ing everything up also, I tried doing so many things to fix it but it just wouldnt work. In the end, i had to do a clean install of windows because of it.

This is the first inkling of problems I've had...but somehow, I should have expected more //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
I'm running WinXP Pro. A few days ago, both IE and AIM started crashing on me - I'd open them up, and a few seconds later I'd get a message that they needed to close. The message referenced a "wininet.dll" file...OK, so I go and download a new version of that file. They still hang.

Do I need to completely clean out and update the registry? If someone knows what's causing this, please give me a step-by-step instruction on how to fix it...because computers are not my thing //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Thanks in advance.
