Problem: Mouse and Keyboard (both NON-usb) stopped responding.

As I boot up the computer, I heard a terrible clicking sound for about 10 seconds, then it stopped and proceeded to windows. Unfortunately I can't even log into windows because my keyboard nor mouse work. I know my keyboard is getting power though, when I boot up the PC it lights up for a second as it normally would.

I have a pair of hard drives, a 20 as main and 40 as secondary. After I took the 40 out the clicking stopped, so I assume that hard drive is dead. Doesn't matter anyway, I was looking at getting a 200-300gig to replace these two anyway. Even though I eliminated the clicking, my mouse and keyboard still won't work.

The mouse is very new, the keyboard is old as hell. It's so old it's yellow now because of how much use it has had. I've tried 2 different mice, nothing works.

Tomorrow I am going to get an adapter to make my mouse accessible via usb and see if that works. But until then, what can I do? What do you folks think the problem is?

For the record I did a virus scan last night, found 1 virus, and it was deleted. At first I thought it was a nasty virus until I remembered I had done a scan about 12 hours before this happened.

*cries*

For those of you confused over how I am posting, I'm at work. I do however have 2 computers at home.

Wait - I don't understand the problem. Your computer boots to Windows, but your mouse and keyboard aren't working?

Is it a USB or PS/2 Keyboard? I killed a nice Epox motherboard by connecting a PS/2 keyboard while it was powered on; If you lost that connection, it's possible that happened.

If it's a USB mouse/keyboard, try another port, or another keyboard. There should be two sets at least of USB ports on your computer; the PCI bus ports, and some directly from the motherboard. Try the ports on the front of the PC - if not, try the back. Etc. Maybe you blew a USBus.

If the keyboard is that old, it's probably a PS/2. Replace it with a USB keyboard, not a USB adaptor. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

how'd you run a virus scan if mouse & keyboard don't work?

does BIOS give any POST errors/beeps on bootup?

I tend not to like USB keyboard/mice since you can't use them prior to the OS installing itself...

I have a wireless keyboard/mouse combo that I use that connects through USB, but I bought a cheap $10 wired PS/2 keyboard for times when I need to boot Linux up (multi-OS system).
