When I went in to take the civil servants exam for a local city job (nothing special, just a job), I walked into an auditorium that had almost 500 other people in it. The first thing the speaker at the podium said was "yes, you are all here for the same job, one position". 1 in 30 isn't such bad odds, 1 in 500 is ridiculous.Yeah I can't tell you how disheartening it is to walk into a room for an interview and be greeted by 30+ other candidates...
I make a small fraction of what I did 5 years ago. Im the first to admit some of it is due to my own mistakes, but a lot of it is simply because manufacturing jobs like I had just aren't growing on trees anymore. For those of you claiming there are still plenty of jobs out there, Id point out the difference between unemployment, and underemployment. The economy is fucked up, and people have a right to be concerned. If you truly feel today's unemployment is simply due to personal laziness, then you are living a sheltered life. I suggest you enjoy that sheltered life while you still can.
