Laid off, that is.
I work(ed) for a student loan processing company, as a customer service rep. As financial times are hard, you can image that it has impacted our business. Business has been getting really really slow. It had gotten to the point where they had to send people home everyday, and since I never volunteered to go home, these last few days they made me go home.
I drive 25 miles 1 way to work, and to get there and 3 hrs later told to go home, is not good. They had a meeting with us yesterday about the slow times and basically that hrs are going to be cut back dramatically for everyone. There were other options as well for people who short hours everyday would not work for them.
I debated on if it was worth it to work 3 hrs a day where I live 25 miles away. After careful consideration, I decided to take an alternate option they had provided us. That option was to take Administrative leave until business picks up. I talked to them about modifying that to tailor my needs better.
Because I will be going back for my last year or college in 3 weeks, and would need part time at that point anyway. So what we worked out is that I will be on Admin leave. This is where I am still employed with the company, I will not lose my standing, my paid time-off, my tenure, all of this will remain. It is basically a temporary lay-off while keeping everything else.
So we worked it out that in 3 weeks I will return to work with 15 hrs a week, which would be what I would work around school regardless of this. In the meantime, I will be drawing un-employment, and hopefully I will be working for someone else to get some money for the next 3 weeks.
Kind of a bummer day, but at least I am not completely out of a job. Especially where I love my job, I love what I do, and I love the company I work for. I am glad that I will be able to return to them.
