Contact the police and have one of them come with you. Meet up in a public place and have the officer in site, but not anywhere too visible. Talk beforehand about a signal you can use to tell the officer to come over after you know for sure he has your stuff. I've done this several times, always works.

As bad as you want to kick his ***, it's not worth getting sued over. Or even worse, going to jail and having to go to long court hearings.

Naw not true, I never filed a report when I had something stolen and I got my stuff back after I found it and the trial of the theif getting convicted. As long as you have concret evidence (serial numbers) you are golden with or with out a Police report. Yes having filed a Police report would have been benifical but it is not needed to get your stuff back.

For real, have your buddies box him in then roll up in the Exlpoder. It will make him **** himself. But, there is always that chance of later retaliation. Take down his info, (plates, phone, name, etc.) get enough proof and go to the police. Chances are this guy could be out on parole and he could go back for some time. Then if the police don't do anything, wreck his ***.

Remember, if anything goes too far, ammonia is great at getting rid of bloodstains. If you have a pig farm nearby throw the body to the pigs, they will never find him.
