I cooked a voice coil. I want to build a custom woofer. anyone done this?

I just traded the remaining good woofer with box and a really ****** offbrand 4ch amp i had laying around for an ipod touch 32 gig on craigslist which is perfect because I have ipod support on my HU and now I can use my phone freely I can also play FLAC (apple lossless).

a eq is good for cutting ONLY. if you need to boost you dont have enough power...
Awesome man //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. this forum is just pouring with knowledge so i'm going to become a supporting member.

So my first question I guess is Can i change the motor? I'd like to hunt down a real nice motor somewhere for cheap and be able to just swap it on, but i'm guessing that it really doesn't work like that and i'm going to have to take it to a machine shop and get holes drilled either into my motor or basket to get it centered.

Also, With cone/voicecoil fitting, is this something you just get right with time? Or is there some kind of trick that you can use to make sure the voice coil is aligned well It would be pretty hard to measure how to get it aligned into the motor correctly because you can't really fit a tape measurer in there, not to mention trying to cut a perfect hole after that. I can't imagine doing that right without a holesaw I'm REALLY hoping that all cones have a default hole with default voicecoil placement that's basically just drop in. I've been doing some research and found that you can buy coils only as well.

I basically want to build this into a pretty cool monster woofer. I'm not expecting great results but i want it to be stronger than it was before.

I'd imagine glueing the surround back on and the spider has to be exact as well otherwise the coil will rub.

Unfortunately yes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif.

The voice coil is part of the upper assembly, and is included in a recone kit. So just replacing the motor isn't going to work.

I dont know which frame your sub uses, so I dont know if the mounting holes are 'standard' or not.

Some of the custom sub builders here, like PSI or SPLaudio, will probably know what coil fits your motor, and can supply it (and the rest of the top assembly/softparts) if you want to rebuild it yourself.

Usually centering the voice coil upon assembly is done using shim stock such as a piece of paper or index card, depending on the tightness of the gap for that particular motor.

A lot of members here rebuild their own subs, so you shouldn't have much trouble getting help rebuilding it yourself.
