I cooked a voice coil. I want to build a custom woofer. anyone done this?

Send them to SPL and let him work his magic...
I don't think i'm going to send it in to replace. it. I'll probably just sell one or keep it around.

I just figured I might as well give it a shot and make myself a custom woofer with different parts for fun because i have a motor, basket, and cone laying around now. I'm sure i'll learn something from it too.

I need to know what your amp is rated at (wattage) and what ohm load your running and I'll look it up it's real easy to do only takes about 5mins and your good to pound!
1200 RMS @ 4 ohms. Is there a mathematical formula to it? or some kind of generator on a flash/java site?

69.28 volts ac set your test tone to repeat 50hz works well and turn off all filters turn the HU about 3/4 of the way up(eq set to flat) and hook the dmm leads to the speaker out terminal (unhook the subs) now looking at your dmm turn the gain until you see 69.28 now turn down the HU reset all fiters and adjust eq to your liking(try not to use positive gain on your eq it causes distortion ex. if theres to much treble don't add bass just remove treble) and yes there is a mathmatical formula I just dont remember it, I have a chart saved in my computer I'm sure someone can fill you in on that. If you want the chart google amp gain settings chart and look for the one in black and red it also has the same step by step instructions at the bottom

Thanks man I really appreciate this, Definately will be doing this to all of my subs from now on

I also have 7 band equalizer with a Sub out, It's turned up all the way all the time, do i have to mess with the levels while i do it or i s it simply a volume issue.

If you would've responded I would've taken them out of the car. You wouldnt've traded the fosgate amp anyways and i didn't want the sony amp. I'm sure you've done this before too but thanks for laughing at me.
yea i burnt up of of my old arc audioz but they charged me 50 and gave me a new one

Yeah it was bass boost, I tried to set my gains to the best of my knowledge and really low. (Turning it back when you hear distortion)
It just wasn't hitting hard enough so i set my amp to the +25 db setting which then gave me another option which i switched to Low pass instead of mix. then put the low pass knob all the way down.

Sounded great for about an hour until my amp when into protection. Started it up again to go on another drive and the amp when into protection except this time the subs didn't work. so i took them out of the box and low and behold one of them had smoke coming out of it. Tested the other one and it's completely fine, but i'm not running it in this car again.

I don't listen to any hip hop all i listen to is dubstep and bassline/drum and bass so it was just constantly getting a pounding at all frequencies nonstop.

At least it was to a $100 sub instead of a $500 sub.

I'm sure everyones done this at least once lesson learned.
shit happens man

but you definately couldve protected yourself from this....

Could've protected myself from touching the stove when I was 5 too.

Can't cry over spilt milk.

Not only that, I now know the real consequences of it so I will have much more respect and take much better care of my equipment than if i had "Just heard that they blow if such and such happens"

If it still allows signal to pass through I would do it with the EQ turned all the way down anything else is going to introduce distortion into the signal path distortion is what took your sub out as distortion=heat, if you must use the eq at least try not cranking the knobs on it, I have two boost knobs going to both of my amps(highs and lows) and the only time I use them is when I MUST compensate for a poorly recorded song other then that there just indicator lights!

I would lose the eq all together.

I could remove it and it wouldn't be super hard i would just have to rewire a few things.

I thought it would give me better control over the sound. Most of the time i just have everything set to the middle (Flat) I usually tune down the 2.5k hz and the 1k hz (The last ones on the right) a little but when i play different songs that hurt my ears with the treble. Or use the 50hz and crank it just an 1/8th of a turn to give me a little extra bass.

I've still never found a perfect combination that makes it sound better than just being flat.

Sub output is always at max but it's literally completely silent when i turn it all the way down. Maybe that's part of the issue.

So I should get rid of it completely? What's the real downside to these things?

It's one of these btw maybe we're talking about 2 different items.

I would go ahead and pull it out as then there is less to go wrong and if totally silent turned all the way down then it's simply a pass thru type knob then, you would adjust the amp with that turned at max level but I don't know anything about that eq so I could be wrong, I would just pull it and sell it on cl or ebay get some cash for other audio related items.
