Yeah, it's called the shit hitting the fan. I can guarantee you amateur radio operators are riding shotgun with the EMS and cops, as ham radio is the only thing still on the air. I know because I've been listening to what's coming out of there on shortwave for the past few nights...

Wish I was down there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I don't know what news you're watching, Classick, but the mayor of New Orleans had to pull cops off of search and rescue duty to go on looter patrol as the looters have turned exceedingly violent in their efforts to liberate the poor souls affected by Katrina of their property. If your part of FL is basically unaffected then all I can say is lucky you.

Looting is freggin terrible in the Crescent City //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Is it true if you live in some place down south that you can't get flood insurance?
Because the city of New Orleans is shaped like a bowl and only had the levee system (which we all see now just how woefully inadequate that was) to protect it from events such as Katrina the few insurance companies that are willing to underwrite a flood policy price them so high that it's normally only the very affluent that get policies.

Even if you do have homeowners insurance they dont cover floods. Also, like prowler said, more then likely no flood insurance. Smar people will file under hurricane. The insurance companies will try and fight it but they should eventually crack.

Most of the stuff on shortwave is the reports coming out of the parish EOCs (emergency operations centers - the ones that are still up, anyway) to the state EOC where FEMA and the Red Cross are based out of. I've run a radio traffic net like that before (on a vastly smaller scale, hundreds of people instead of hundreds of thousands...) and basically you're sending health & welfare messages...how many casualties in that area, how many people are still missing, any equipment or supply requests from the local authorities. They're also sending messages from family members seperated from each other or out of state, that have no other way to get in touch.

Other than electrical power and food, communications is the next biggest thing that you absolutely must have in a situation like this. Otherwise, it goes to hell in a handbasket...fast.
