HTIB question...

One of my roomates recently purchased a LG HTIB surround system for his bedroom. IT works great with DVD's but the surround sound wont work with the sound coming from the tv. He doesnt have a dvr box or anything yet in his room, does he need to get one and just use the optical or coaxial inputs for the sound to work?

Is there any other way?

If his TV/cable box doesn't supply a dobly digital signal then he won't get true 5.1, but most decent receivers have a pseudo surround mode...
