HS Baseball Phenom leaves after Sophomore year... Thoughts

His name is Bryce Harper and is thought to many as being the next great baseball prospect. He's a catcher from NV and is getting similar HS hype in baseball as Lebron did in basketball. He was an Aflac All-American as a freshman in high school. He hit .590 11HR 67RBI in only 38 games for Las Vegas HS as a freshman.

 

He's been rumored of hitting 550+ ft homeruns, throwing a 95mph+ fastball(even though he's a catcher), and is only 16yrs old. He has chosen to leave HS after his sophomore year, get his GED, and go to a community college to try to be drafted in 2010. There are already talks of him being the #1 overall pick in 2010 just because of his raw talent. Just wanted to see everyone's thoughts on what he's doing and your opinion of him.

well my thoughts are kinda with thaster I think its great he has the talent but it seems as though he is throwing all his eggs in one basket if he gets hurt he's kinda sol no education no lifes lessons through Hs

I have a biased opinion to something like this because i saw someone go to college, instead of taking the baseball money. He went to college and 2 years later tore his rotator cuff and now he's back living in town working a regular blue collar job. He turned down $1.5 million signing bonus to go to school, now he doesn't have that money and is working/going back to school.

 

IMO i think its right what he's doing, you never know when you will have a career ending injury. He might as well cash in now and if anything happens to him later he can always go back to school.

I highly doubt the 550ft homerun also, but the Youtube vid i posted does show him hitting a 502ft HR in a HS homerun derby contest @ Tropicana Field.

i think its funny how these other sports are letting these kids do what they want. if it were a black kid trying to do the same thing concerning basketball, the sports world would trip and think he was some ignorant nga tryin to cash in. with this kid they feel like "HS is holding him back".

Hitting 502 foot hr with pitches right down the middle with an aluminum bat just proves you are strong. When he gets to the league it will be interesting to see how good he actually is. I doubt he is anything more than average.
