Got a HU today but I can't find out how to take the faceplate off, the model # is kdc-x715, it's a nice HU, and it was my dad's before me, but he never took the faceplate off, anyone had any experience with this?

Is that one of the ones with either the D-Mask or D-Mask+ revolving faceplates?

(The difference between the former and the latter is that the '+' designation on the latter meaning it is the motorized version)

If so when the faceplate is at a 90* angle to the unit's chassis (parallel with the ground) you'll put your fingertips at the very top of the faceplate - which is now pointed towards the unit's chassis - and slowly pull it towards you. It will slide off of the plate it rests on normally.

Actually - hold on and I'll give you pics of the process on a deck with the manual revolving version, the plain D-Mask.

Once it is off and its baseplate is shoved back against the deck like you see there in the last pic you'll put the right-hand edge all the way back against the chassis then the left-hand edge should kindof 'snap' in.

sweet man! Thanks that was the way to get it off, sir prowler you are the man lol it looks good with the deck all the way turned around but i cant take the chances of it getting stolen! thanks again man

oh, and mine is the +, so it's motorized. But just out of curiousity, how do you flip it manually?

If you are asking how to flip the motorized version manually I wouldn't know. I never owned a D-Mask+ unit.

If you are asking how to operate the version I have, though, there is a release button at the bottom right of the display that releases the faceplate. Going left to right at that corner of the face you can see the AM button, then the recessed reset button, then the faceplate release button.

Pressing that lets it go and swings into position as seen in Pic 2.

You can either revolve it all the way around to show the blank plate at the reverse or remove the faceplate and then swing the faceplate base back like seen in the last pic.

I like that. I'm always worried about mine getting stuck like so many people's have. I think I'd rather have one like that so I wouldn't be so paraniod lol

The D-Mask+ mechanized version like what you have inherited from your pops was the bane of Kenwood's existence for many years and the largest reason for their loss of market share due to bad PR once unit after unit after unit after unit got returned for exchange or repair under warranty.

Word of mouth advertising, whether good or bad, is an incredibly powerful force and once the word got out on the street that Kenwood's top end decks had problematic faceplates shoppers went elsewhere in droves. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif
