how to safely test subs?

i have a few subs lying around and i would like to safely test them but the only amp i have is way to powerful and already hooked up in my car.

so i guess my question is how should i go about testing these?

should i just hook it up to my amp in my car quick at 4 ohm (all subs are dual 2 ohm) and not turn it up loud and see if its audible?

Just turn the gain down and wire them correctly on the amp... slowly turn the gain up abit to get them flexing and see if there is any odd noises...

hook em up to the amp and turn the gain all the way down if the amp is way to powerful
