how to identify impedance of sub?

okay so my friend gave me a sub for free and i was wondering is there anyway to i dentify the impedance of a sub? i dont know the name or model.... also if its 4 ohm, how can i wire it to 8 ohm just to be safe, and curious? what about if its 2 ohm how can i wire it so that it has higher impedance?
