How to get the, "kick" or "punch" feeling

i guess i'm a bit confused on how to go about achieving the punch feeling.
I don't necessarily desire a LOUD setup... rather one that allows me to feel the bass. For rock music especially, with the drums and quick bass hits.

Would a good set of components provide this for me? or should i consider a sealed box setup?

Thanks
If you want to feel the kick or punch from the bass guitar or kickdrums,

you need higher SPL. How are you going to feel this with low SPL, ie

headphones are a good example of high SQ and no feeling due to lack of

SPL.

For lower frequency, focus on boosting or optmiizing the box to a higher

tuning frequency to get more kick, 70hz plus or minus. Or make a subwoofer

tuned lower but get your SPL level high using other means -> better woofer,

more power, or multiple woofers, etc. The flatter response vs. huge peak,

might be more rewarding overall.

If you want to feel the music outside the bass reqion you need a higher SPL

full range sound system, this expliots rock or metal music better than

a generic install using a subwoofer and a generic set of component speakers

{2 mids, 2 tweeters}. More money, bigger install, etc.

Power

SPL

Full range

what the **** are you talking about? spl gives the kick he wants to feel? why not just have a sub and no speakers and let it play full range, i bet that would give more spl //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

What he is saying is that even if you have a perfect set up but you have a very low wattage system like 20 watts to each comp and 100 to the sub you are not going to really feel the kick like you would with a higher wattage setup that you send 200 per comp and 1500 to the sub. In other words his system will have to put out a certain amount of sound pressure level to really feel it no matter what his setup is.

Yea, I have two 12" CVRs in 2.4 cubic feet each ported to 30hz and I can get a real nice kick feeling. I cross mine over at 63hz with a 6db per octave rolloff and I get nice reproduction all the way around. One thing that can help is actually a BX-10 or Epicenter, not for "bass adding" purposes, but you can set a sweep and curve to accentuate a certain bass area. Pretty much a fancy bass boost setting. Not the best for faithful sound quality in my opinion, but it does give you bass that smacks the back of your head and gets plenty of attention...

Keep in mind that some cd's just don't have that kick you're looking for.

I know it's kinda lame, but pop in No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom"

In a well tuned system, that cd never fails to amaze me, it's one of the best recording's i've ever heard.

That or green day's "Dookie" has a good "punch" to it.

And, midbass is REQUIRED, but "killing me softly" by the fugees (not the lauren hill version) is awesome, it has the actual sound of the beat on the mids, but also has a low synthetic beat playing under it, to add the real kick in the pants. If you've got good enough midbass, it's recorded well enough where turning off the subwoofer creates no audible difference in sound (on the beat) it just loses the punch that tags along with it.

I usually don't like when songs are recorded that way, but it works with hip hop.

and a note on taking the time to beef up your door speaker install,

seriously don't underestimate the difference in sound a properly deadened and insulated door panel will make on the overall sound of your car,

before i got my midbass working correctly (one of the speaks actually turned out to be wired in reverse) the bass in some songs seemed 'off' like it didn't match the song, and in some songs, the beat would sound like it was delayed, esp. on 'intergalactic' by the beastie boys,

but once i finally deadened my door speakers, corrected the phasing, and put in some ported speaker baffles, to make sure all the sound made it INTO the door, it made a HUGE difference, my bass sound MUCH MUCH louder, and now i realize that the songs that sounded 'off' or 'delayed' were because i was only getting half of the bass track, and the bass on the subwoofer seemed to mismatch the song because there wasn't the proper level of midbass to reference it to.

And the beats that seemed 'delayed' were delayed because on a lot of albums, the actual 'strike' of the beat will play on the midbass driver, and the subwoofer is just the ringing of the beat off the head.

Definitely made/makes a big difference. I think this is the first setup (out of at least 4 so far) that actually sounds 'right'
