how thick does threaded rod bracing need to be?

i braced my box in the part it seems to be flexing the most with a 5/16th threaded rod. is using this small a rod going to cause any problems, wood cracking or anything? i guess my thinking was the smaller it was, the less likely it would be to leak air.

shoudl be fine if you use a big washer to spread out the load from the nut.

i used flared nuts with rubber washers.

I would put a metal washer in there, the rubber one will still allow some give for the box to flex and totally defeat the purpose. If you are worried about air leaks, seal the box from the inside with silicone or hot glue.
