When thinking of upgrading don't even for one second let time be the thing that convinces you to upgrade. 3 years, 6 years, 10 years it doesn't matter. The second you think to yourself "this computer can no longer do what i need/want it to do" is when you should think about upgrading. I hate seeing people overpay for a new PC because it's got all these bells and whistles on it.
I used to work at Circuit City(ya go figure) but a couple came in bought a brand new desktop, they were upgrading from an old pos. They ended up getting sold a QUADCORE, 1TB Hard Drive space, 8 gb's of ram and a beast video card. That's fine and all but the couple was 70+ years old maybe older. They won't be doing anything other than email. And someone convinced them they needed a quadcore cpu and all that other shit to do email.
So when your computer stops being able to keep up with your demands is when you should upgrade. Obviously not if you have alot of money. or when you have a new piece of hardware that you want to use and the old computer doesn't have a port/hookup that it has to have to work with the new hardware.
