I have an idea to custom fit 8" subs in place of the 6.5 rear factory ( in x-cab pick-up). What is a safe distance? Should I scrap it and make a box?

You might try using the Tang Band 6.5" "subwoofer" instead of modifying your vehicle. Great little drivers.
