How much room is needed? HELP PLEASE!!

How much room is required from the end of my sub to the back of my tailgate??

The box i am ready to build puts both subs about 3 1/2 to 4 1/4" from the tailgate.

Is this OK???

I've heard you have to have at least as much room as your port is wide. So this means that my port is 3" wide. So the gap between the box and the tailgate is just over 3". Will it work....

NEED ANSWERS QUICK!!!!
