How much power is just right?

I am getting a JL Audio 12W0v2-4 12" sub. 300 watts RMS and 600 watts Peak. I was wondering how much power my amp should have. I was thinking 500 watts but i'm not sure.

If you have any suggestions of an amp for me then let me know, thanks.

P.S.

Is 300 watts RMS going to be loud or will it ****? haha

I had that 12 for a very short time.....

Ran it on an MTX 81000d. (rated at 500 @ 4 ohms.)

Seemed to do fine but the sub just sucked over all IMO.

I actually used it for target practice at my range on my property here in Ga......wish I would have taken some pics.....

Trial and error is the only way for certain to say for your situation. My guess it it would be fine off anywhere from 250-600w assuming it's not thermally overloaded.. Don't get stuck on one specific number like 500w because from 300 to 500 in theory will yield less than 3 dB gain and even less in reality.

It's not a ground pounder sub, so keep that in mind. The 300w rating is thermal too, so if you have it in a larger box, expect mechanical limits to be reached before thermal limits.
