How much into play does cone area effect?

If SPL is directly related to moving air. What sub parameters should one look at to achieve a higher SPL??

In a sealed box it's simply a matter of Vd, which is Sd * Xmax.

For a ported box, things are a little more complicated and, simply, you can't just look at the specs and know XYZ will get louder than XYX without know details about the enclosure.

louder? actual excursion and cone surface area combined to equal the amount of air you're moving.Xmax as a number isn't really an acurate way to measure output of a speaker..

Once you exceed the Xmag of the driver, and get outside of the magnetic gap, you're using a tremendous amount of energy for very little return as well as loss of cone control. Going from one driver to two, or multiple with an equal overall power, or doubling the power to a sub will result in a huge increase in output.
