How much do grilles effect performance?

As long as the grille is deep enough to allow the sub's maximum excursion, it should be fine.

I heard they added a full 5dbs as long as you had neon lights on them...

I'de only use a grill to protect my equipment. If no protection is needed, there is no use to use the grills.

I was thinking more on the lines of a "finished" look. Good point on the excursion, I did not even think of that.
