How I got fired (or Why Emotion is Bad When Asking for a Raise)

This happened a while ago, but I am just telling the story now in hope to spice up The Lounge. I've told the story elsewhere before, and I just copy/pasted my original thread.

This is a tale of what can happen when you fly on straight emotion in the workplace. Proceed with caution, and make sure your sense of humor is firmly in place.

I work at a job that I am literally sick off. If you have ever worked retail, you know how absolutely shitty and seizure-enducingly aggravating it can be. These factors had been weighing on my mind for months, but what happened last night pushed me over the edge.

After talking to several of my co-workers, I had discovered that I was making the least of anybody in my department. This is funny because I have been there more than all of my co-workers, and know more about that store than anybody. So, I ask to see my boss to resolve this issue.

Ah, my boss. To say the man is cheap is like saying Rick James was on cocaine. It’s understating the obvious. He is also one of the biggest dicks I have ever known. As an example, one of our female employees was pregnant and had a miscarriage. My boss fired her because she didn't show up for work the next day. Why he has had no formal complaints against him is beyond me.

Our one-on-one session began with me pointing out my loyal service for well over two years. He agrees that I have been there for a while. Alright. I then go on to point out that my customer service record is nearly spotless. He agrees on that point as well. So, here comes the question. I express to him my thought that I should get a raise, seeing as how I am the most senior of employees and well deserving of said raise.

He thinks for a moment, and then stands up. He looks down at me and tells me that if I were a true team player, I wouldn't complain about what I get paid. He then tells me that for the next week, he is sticking me up at the front register (which I am convinced is a circle of hell, right below forced sodomy with a Buick) as punishment for trying to "extort money out of him".

Well, I never.

Acting on emotion (which is never the best thing), I tell him "if you stick me up front, I will personally insult every customer until you send me back to my department."

Unwavering in his distaste for my dissent, he tells me to get up there. Smiling, I turn and walk out.

This will be fun.

Now in no way, shape, or form am I glorifying berating customers for revenge against your boss. If you have to berate customers, do it because they’re idiots.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see my boss staring at me through the window of the office door (which has a good angle of the front). A lady with two screaming, climbing, borderline retarded kids walks up and buys condoms.

"Trying not to make the same mistake a third time?" I ask. Her face turns red.

"WHAT THE HELL IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!?"

"Nothing, nothing. By the way, don't I know you from Maury? Hey, it is you! Did the paternity results come back yet?"

She throws the condoms at me and storms out. I glance over at the window. The boss stares wide-eyed back at me, shocked that I actually did it. I smirk.

Just then, a black couple walks up. The man wore a New Orleans Saints jersey, and had his arm around the girl. Immediately, I jump back.

"Oh God!"

"What?" the lady asks.

"Just... take the money! Don't hurt me!"

"What you talking 'bout, dog?" the guy asks me.

"Oh.... *whew*" I relax. "I thought you were going to rob me. I'm sorry."

"You think just 'cause we black, we was gonna rob you?"

"No. I thought you’d rob me because I thought you were from New Orleans.”

"**** YOU!"

I duck the fist thrown by the woman. The man drags her out, telling her to "forget that cracker". She screams “let’s flood your ****ing city and see how you like it!”

By now the boss is next to me. I look over at him.

"Can I go back to my department yet?"

I start job hunting tomorrow.
