How far does the end of a subwoofer need to be from the speaker box wall?

I'm building a new box and I can't seem to find an answer to this. Is there a nominal distance the end of the woofer should be away from the back wall, or does it really matter? I'm trying to squeeze as much depth as I can out of my box. I have a 9.5" mounting depth and am wanting to go with an internal depth of 10.5". Anyone?

if there is a pole vent give it a couple of inches. if there is no vent it dosnt matter

If you're going by manufacturers specs they sometimes include pole vent clearance in the depth measurement.

Are you speaking when the pole vent travels parallel with the subwoofer, or in any case? I ask because my woofer will go the depth of the box, and the vent will travel lengthwise. I'm thinking that with 9.5" mounting depth I could make the interal about 10.5". Should I bump it up to 11"?

Another question I have:

My hole diameter for the 12w7 is 10.5". The complete diameter is 12.5". I'm wanting to do an external height of the box at 14", giving an internal height of 12.5". That means the front piece of MDF is going to be 12.5" tall. That gives about a 2" difference between the height & the cutting hole. Will this be sufficient? I'd even like to go as low as a 13" height, with 11.5" internal height. See pic below:

pole vent = hole in the sub MAGNET most have it, some don't MT=NO, new XXX=NO, DD=Yes, RESE=Yes.
