how does the -6,-12 and -18 db work?

i have these features on my hu. and i was wondering how they work. i have them for the subs, front, and rear components. just wondering what exactly they do. can't really tell a change in sound all that much. its a pioneer 8600 btw..

i have the subs on low pass 80hz and below and the comps on high pass 80hz and above..
