How Does Ohms Matter?

Alright so to get right to the point, Amplifier RMS Rated Power and Ohm Rating Means next to nothing correct? It is what you set the gains at that makes all the difference in the world.

For Example here, lets say you have a 500 watt rms subwoofer.. and a 3000 watt RMS amplifier, and the amplifier says it does 3000 watts rms @ 1 ohm.. Well that is NOT true.. just because you have your amp set on a 1 ohm load does NOT mean that it is going to play 3000 watts RMS, it is all in the gains! If you set your gains with a DMM, and match the output voltage on the amp to correspond with the RMS power of the Sub, aka 500 watt Sub working completely fine with a 3000 watt RMS amp.. what does it matter what ohm load or capability this amp has? Its all in the gains.. You can set your gains to whatever power you want, just because of the ohm rating, it dosent mean thats the power that its going to do, its how you set it up, correct?

3000 Watt RMS Amp rated at 3K Watts @ 1 Ohm

500 Watt RMS Subwoofer

These two can go completely perfect together, even if the amp is played @ 1 ohm, because you have turned the gains down to output 500 watts, not 3000 correct?

so what does it matter?

um......if its a 3000 watt rms @ 1 ohm, if you have a TRUE 1 ohm reactive load then your going to get 3000 watts with the correct tuning....
Not if you have the gains set to a minimum

I can take a DMM right now, plug in afew numbers and tune my amp to any output i want.. if i had a hifonics XX-Maxximus that does 10K RMS , i could get it to play 200 watts rms with the turn of a knob, all i have to do is set the voltage to that and its good to go.. OHM rated power means nothing, its how you have your gains

Depends on the signal

Sine waves are not the same as music. But you are technically correct, almost entirely when speaking about bass...almost. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Sine Waves are stronger then music, thats why people use them to set the gains on there amp, its almost always a stronger signal than music, music will be afew volts less usually

this guy just restated something EVERYONE here knows, in the WORST and most HARD TO UNDERSTAND way ever in the history of audio.

you could of said "just because u have 3000 watts of power doesnt mean u have to use it"

Ya, and you can have a 10,000 watt @ 1 ohm Amp, and run a 200 watt speaker at 1 ohm on that amp, and play it at 200 watts of power perfectly

Amplifier RMS Rated Power and Ohm Rating Means next to nothing correct

Terminology lesson of the day: You got the first part right, by saying power. "ohm rating" means nothing. The correct term is RESISTANCE rating.

I get tired of reading people saying "whats the ohms of my sub" or "how many ohms does my amp like"

Resistance is the ohms as power is to watts. UNITS PEOPLE, UNITS!

OR Nominal Impendance, the important part be nominal.

i hate ppl who think they know more than they actually do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
I know that im running a hifonics XX-Herc @ 1 ohm at 400 watts rms, which is supost to be doing 2K+ @ 12 volts
