How do you prevent a downward spiral in a kid?

This question goes out to those of you who have brothers

or sisters that grew up in the same home as you, and you

witnessed their downward spiral. You know what I'm talking

about or I'm not talking to you. Drugs, crime, or worse.

From your perspective, did you notice it first, before your parents?

Did you feel you had some insight, like if dad had only .... whatever

it was, said or did something different. What should they have done

(in your mind) to prevent the bad times that came.

Did they treat you differently than the other person, in such a way that

may explain why you were OK?

I suppose this question could also be opened up to those who went the

wrong way and came back from it as well, I would not mind hearing from

you too. But this primarily is a question to the witness of the spiral.

From my perspective, parents should lead by example, not set rules and not follow them themselves. as for a downward spiral in a sibling, my oldest brother went to one, and its hard to say what you can do from your position because he might not want to listen to you. Professional help might be good if you find someone who can connect to people, but most of the kids that I have seen to bad had parents they hated. As for me, I started a few times but stopped because my father is a great role model. Good luck man....

Most of the time, you can only help those who want help. If they don't, good luck as it will take a miracle.

My wifes newphew is a major fawk up, granted he is still young 16 to be exact, however he has stole, done drugs, knocked up a 13 year old girl, been in and out of JJC more times than I could think about and on house arrest twice.

I blame the parents......well the mom mostly, as she has made some bad choices in boyfriends that fawked the kid up, locking him in rooms and handcuffing him to poles and shit when he wouldn't listen. She just would turn her head, because she is a fawk up too! Thank god it is my wifes half sister and she is nothing like her.

I tried to help him out, but he ended up stealing off me, not to mention calling my wife all kind of names and shit, which enough is enough. I have come close a couple of times of beating his ***, but I would be no different than what he is used too. I really wish I could help him, I just don't have enough time.

That's f#cked up. Your right he needs help, but probably professional help from that kind of abuse.

Sometimes though it's just one kid out of 2 or 3 that just take things to the extreme.
I understand. Especially if you don't get nearly the attention your other siblings get and not "loved" equally I think that really gets to kids. Just from what I have seen in my stepbrother and other kids my age who grew up with my whole life.

i think it's all on there own, i use to be a huge f*ck up getting arrested, being like an alcoholic, brought home by cops like twice a weekend. then when i hit 16 and got arrested and realized that i was f*cking up my life i turned myself around. i think it's all the kids mindset parents just have to be there for them
