How does everybody here compare stuff and act like they no it's better or worse than the other product? I mean, how is it even possible to go buy a pair of hertz components and use them for a while and then go buy a pair of cdt's or something and then tell the difference. I can never tell the difference in quality to save my life. I just don't get how stuff can really be compared to one another. To me, all subs sound the same. I never heard a difference between jl, alpine, rockford or anything like that, they carry low frequencies, and thats all that i notice. Someone please tell me.

Locally, I hold an SQ meet where we all gather just to hear each others shit for this purpose. You can hear everything from Audison, to Rockford fosgate and everything in between. I personally don't read shit on here and regurgitate it for others to read. I only go by what I have heard and I am pretty proud of that. Go get some exposure to different types of installs and speaker set ups and you will realize that some comments you made on here are incorrect.

You have never switched out a speaker and noticed any differences in sound?

Then why do you bother buying aftermarket car audio if it all sounds the same?

while this is a stupid question, and speakers do without a doubt sound different, the vast majority of children here simply go off "what their e-buddy told them" (same as any forum for the most part). sad but true.

x2leave it factroy if you hear no differences
ya. factroy really is best.

This method leaves out one very important factor: install. really the only way to accuratly "compare" a driver is to test each in your own car, properly installed in the correct enclosure, with the proper amount of power. and really, who has the time/money/desire to do that? I know of the "great 12 inch challenge" bs, and while i commend them on there efforts, it was a horrible failure. putting each sub in what amounts to a "prefab" enclosure (or several) and listening to them is NOT the correct way to do it. (still more than anyone else has really done, and i dont think they get the recognition they deserve for that)

This is actually an interesting question and possibly something that we cannot help you with. Have you ever had your hearing checked to see if you were tone deaf? Speakers all carry some unique quality to them (good or bad) that is almost always noticeable. I would recommend taking a few of your favorite songs and play them on a few friends systems. Sit in the drivers seat and move around slightly to get a feel for the proper staging location for your head.

Also, try to find some that have silk and some that have Ti. You should hear a bright sound and a more smooth upper end depending on the type of tweeter and where the cutoff is.

You can totally hear a difference between different brands/models. I wish it all sounded the same...I would have a lot more money.

huge difference in sq btwn my rainbow comps on amp and pioneer 6x8 coax. Also My HU made some significant changes to sound as well as deadening. As for subs the biggest notices I hear are power handling, excursion delay, and frequency peak(a lot to do with the box)

stock - aftermarket infinity references, very large difference, even though their was less midbass with the references, its sounded clearer. The tweeters, however were very harsh.

infinity references - pg rsd - Were in different cars (when i changed from my old car to my current car) - midbass was much louder on the pg rsds (after they wore in) and the tweeters were not as harsh, although i still would prefer them a little more soft than they are now.

i have also heard my friends system with 2 audiobahn 10's, they got loud, but most of the notes sounded the same or similiar and kind of hollow sounding (not sure if thats the best way to describe it.)

I used to have a 12 infinity perfect vq, did not get as loud as the audiobahn 10's (i was running less then half the power) but it sounded much better.

I have then upgraded to an fi q sealed, and it actually sounds very close to the infinity when at low volumes. I can't really tell a difference between them on rap, but do notice a little better response on the fast notes on rock.

I then upgraded to a ported box, and it got much louder, but it sounds almost the same as the sealed box it used to be in, again i cant really tell the difference between the sealed and the ported box when listening to rap, but on rock i did notice a slight difference, but i think it just might because of the hump in the bass frequencies around the 40hz range with the ported box.

That's what I was thinking. If everything sounds the same, then you might be tone deaf. Without being able to tell the difference in similar notes, it would be very difficult to hear one driver produce the sound differently than another. You would biased in your hearing towards output differences but the tonality would sound similar.

If you're tone deaf, consider it either a curse or a lucky break. That way, you only have to worry about drivers meeting your output needs and build quality. You should be able to build a great sounding system for your ears on a very low budget and it would be very difficult for you to hear subtle differences by going with lower distortion equipment.

Another thing to consider is that the listening environment plays a large role in the overall sound of the system. It can easily have more of an effect than the differences between two drivers, especially if they're coupled to the environment the same (similar enclosure type and alignment, not same EXACT enclosure as the alignment will change when you vary drivers). This also helps skew many "reviews" people give on equipment because they are describing how the equipment sounds in a particular environment. When people hear other peoples' cars, they try to just compare the equipment and not the environment and that can lead to incorrect comparisons.
