IT's funny, black people think we've arrived, but I don't think we have quite yet. It's a step in the right direction that a black man who worked twice as hard to be perceived as twice as good as the other guy is recognized as such. I will consider it progress when we see the black version of Dubya go to the White House and everybody who made excuses for Dubya the last 8 years sticks to the same low standards and makes them for him too and we can go the whole term without hearing something like 'See what happens?'
'Sure, President Tyrone had a drinkin problem back in the day. Yes, there's a couple DUIs, an embarassing vido or two out there, and he still likes to kick back and sneak himself a 40 every now and then when nobody's lookin. It's OK, it just means he's an average guy with average problems who can identify with the common man.'
'And yes, he was a D+/ C- student who partied alot and didn't hit the books too hard and got into some trouble in school. That's OK, he's got down home common sense and good intentions, that's all that matters. It should count for more than any mistakes he made in the past.'
'Of course, President Tyrone does have a tendency to want to blow shit up and ask questions later, like maybe 4-6 years later. No big deal. It doesn't make him a stupid violent thug/cowboy, it shows he's a strong and decisive leader who's not afraid to do whatever it takes to defend the country.'
'Sure Tyrone does mispronounce the names of some countries and seems to lack a grasp of the more complex aspects of foreign affairs and world history. It's OK, he's only human, honest good guy, down home common sense, blah-blah-blah'
Congratulations to Obama because he has made it to the big chair in a world where he needs work twice as hard and be twice as smart as the next guy to be considered equal. That is tremendous, no matter how you look at it or what you think of him. But I am still waiting to see what happens when the black version of Dubya throws his hat in the ring and people are not nearly as willing to overlook the things they've overlooked for the last 8 years.
