how do i test my preouts for output?

i have a dmm and kno how to test my RCAs, but the pre outs just have the hole where i usually stick the red probe

Put the positive one inside the connector, touching the center conductor...put the other one on the outer barrel.

ok thats what i thought, but wasnt sure, seems like my sub pre out is dead and a need a new cd player
