how do i smoke meat?

I have never myself smoked meat, but my dad has many times. He usually leaves it in for a good half a day in the smoker. I would also try googling as that may be your best bet.
i tried and mostly it talks about the side box. i don't have one and just trying to get any input

 
i made a trash can smoker it works really well only issue i have is it can get a little hot kuz i rigged it up with a propane burner to smoke the chips. so just start the smoking of the chips over on one side and put the meat on the other. try to keep the heat around 220 degrees and let them sit for like and hour and half beofre u start checking them or open the lid. but keep and eye on that temp to hot they dry out to cool they dont cook, then when they are done after about 2.5 hours throw them on a HOT grill and put ur sauce on them to be able to "carmelize" ur sauce on them (only about 10 min) then let them sit for 10 min to stiffen the sauce up and enjoy. here is a pic of mine http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n162/thunderbird1994/Oct15_001.jpg

 
You don't need a side box. It depends on what your grill your trying to use looks like. If its a traditional grill then build a fire on one side and put the food on the other. Make sure you use a water pan under the food thats made from glass.

Pretty much what Thunderbird said but with a water pan
