How do I read this FR chart

HV 165XL - Hertz Hi-Energy car audio woofers
Is the gray line off axis?

What are the dips representing?

From looking at this chart would crossing over at 4k be a bad choice? (Mids in doors)
Freq response changes as soon as you put it in a car. the freq response charts posted by the manufacturer is only good to see ROUGHLY what a speaker can play flatly.

only way to know where to crossover is to have your own RTA and record roll off after your speakers are installed in your doors.

Yes. The gray line represents the off axis response. They don't say how far off axis so it's probably 45*.

Crossing ANY 6.5" off axis woofer over at 4khz is a bad idea, actually. As they start to beam ~ 2.5khz. BUT... it is what it is and that's why having a tweeter that can play lower than your woofer's beaming is a good idea.

It will be fine. Roll with it.

See that's what I don't understand, it sounds very harsh when I cross it a 2.5, I'm sure its all in the tuning, but I think if I had the p99rs I would be able to get a much better sound having .5db steps on the eq instead of 2db.

I use these. You don't want them any higher than 3k. They are made to be strong in the low end so they suffer up top. A good tweeter fixes that problem.

You see the dip at 500hz, that shows a wobble in the imp curve. That's the point of the resonance. Due to cone and surround attachment. Every driver has one but those factors determine where it is. It's not audible

What's harsh? Mid or tweeter

It took me a long time to really get my speakers where i like them using the 80prs. It might not be the xover point. Are you crossing both mid/tweet at the same crossover point? Have you tried putting your mid lpf at 2.5 and your tweets hpf at 3.15? then using shallow slopes like -6 or -12? What exactly do you mean by harsh? have you played with slopes? do you know how slopes effect phase? have you tried flipping phase. Try bringing down 800,1000, 2k, 3k, on your eq. doing them one at a time.

The tweeters hurt my ears the lower I bring them down, I have tried those things also. I will give it a try with crossing at 2.5 and 3.15 again.

What tweeter are you using? Very few small format tweeters can play below 3k clean. If you're crossing lower than 2x Fs and depending on your slope, it doesn't surprise me they sound like poo poo.

And the finer adjustments of the 99 isn't going to magically transform the sound. Although it is a MUCH better HU.

It's the HT28. 2250hz at -24 is about as low as it goes on rated.

Hmm... that's a great tweeter. It should be able to play that. And well.
Can we see your install?

Mid is crossed at 2.5k and tweet at 4k with 12db slope, "seems ok for now" I'm sure I'll change my mind in a few days like all ways.
