How do i carpet this box?

I have 2 boxes i wanted to put some carpet on to make them look nice but the wood on the corners of my boxes is chipped at parts so i cant stretch the carpet all to a even point. is there a good way to fix this problem?

This, or get some 1/8 mdf and glue it on the outside.

the chips are bad enough to the point where carpet wont hide them?
