how big of an enclosure do i need?

when building an enclosure do most people follow the recommended enclosure volume or do they stay close to it? how do I know if im designing the enclosure the right size for my sub/subs?
What sub(s) are you running and how much power are you giving them? That will help determine what you need, along with the room you have to work with.

winISD is probably what you're looking for, there's other tools but that one is designed specifically for box tuning, port size, and enclosure size.

alpine type r 12" running it at 1200wrms for example

but when exactly do I know when the enclosure is to big? does the system tell me or is there something I should know when designing it

Dont question CSCStang hes been in the game way longer than you thats some friendly advice. Most 12's like 1.75 cu ft to 2.5 cu ft per sub (Ported) Sealed different story. Tuning is up to you based on your listening preferences. You didnt even specify if you wanted to build a sealed or ported enclosure. Plus there is T/S parameters (Electromechanical Values) all can be confusing to a newbie. SO, your smartest choice would be to PM CSCStang he knows all about port area, port area per foot, port length and displacements.
