Only way to know for sure is a DMM voltage reading at the amps. You don't want to drop below 12.0V at the worst, and most people would like to stay above 13.0V if at all possible. Do the test yourself and see what you find. That will tell you if batteries are needed. I would assume with that system (1700W RMS) you will end up needing some battery power in addition to that HO alt. I would suggest one of the Group 24 batteries or bigger. Some examples:Im running around... 1700RMSish and im only running a 180A alt and big 3 w/ 4 gauge wire. Stock battery and i still fine unless i really really crank the subs up.

I don't like the Optima product because of many reasons. The main reason being that they are over-priced for the product you are buying. The second main reason being that they do not last as long as the other brands I gave you in the list above. You can get a Deka 9A31 for half the price of a G31 Yellow and the Deka is double the battery IMHO.does the yellow top fall into this group?
Give mechman a call. He has great specials and is VERY helpful. I got a 250 amp alt for $100 off for my Mustang for being a member of a forum (in this case Car Audio Classifieds). It bench tested to 290 amps and was $300.pm mechman on here, he will give you a good deal or even look through summit, they might have something for that
