how are car video monitors measured?

i'm new to this whole car video thing but im very interested in putting 2 monitors in my headrests. i have a '97 chevy s10 blazer and i wanna know how car video monitors are measured.....like is a 5.8 inch monitor 5.8 inches across or from one diagnol to the other. would a 5.8 inch monitor be big enuff for a blazer......its not a real big car and i dont wanna put a 7 incher in and have it right in ur face....thanx for ur help.
