Aaah! The essence of flat rate! Working at a Honda dealership in the service dept. (or any repair shop really) You have an hourly rate, and are paid by the job. The faster you get stuff done, the more you make. If you screw up and have to do it again, however- you do it for free, plus you miss out on new work you could be getting paid for. Here's the really shitty part of my job, in the winter when it's slow and people aren't getting their cars repaired or serviced, and I am like the Maytag repair man standing around all day doing nothing... I get paid......NOTHING! Flat rate is strictly for the buisnesses benefit. no buisness? Well they don't make anything, but they don't have to pay me anything either. I am gar. minimum wage, but even a few jobs at flat rate labor easily overcome that. Plus I had to buy $25,000 worth of tools. My job sucks. I like fixing cars, but the system by which I do it blows goats. Sorry for that rant, I just had a crappy day. Do me a favor everyone? The next time you get your car worked on by a technician, take the time to just say thanks, the pressure they are under is incredible, and to me anyway, a simple thank you of appreciation would be awesome. I know...the wage is supposed to be the thanks, and it is, but we don't make nearly as much as you think we do out of that $50-$80/hr labor rate the shop charges you. Thanks guys.it really does depend on the job...
I prefer to charge my customers established amounts rather than work by the hour... only disadvantage is that it's possible to undercharge myself when a job is harder than it seems at first glance.
