I live in a fairly small town as well where everyone knows everyone and its very common to find cars unlocked with the keys in the ignition in parking lots. Even in these towns its not safe to leave a car unattended, especially with a person who can't defend themselves such as a child or elderly person sitting in the car. Way back before I was born a lady had parked her car outside a small local drug store (we just got a CVS/Walgreens about 4 years ago) with the car running and her elderly mother sitting in the car. Well a guy came and stole the car and finding the older woman in the car decided to "dispose" of any evidence so he went to a local sand n gravel pit put the woman in the trunk and burned the car to the ground with her inside. I don't car how quick the trip is at the least turn off the car and take out the keys for the sake of your loved one, the car can be replaced and a running car is just asking to be stolen no matter where you are.if ya lived in a small town like me i used to work at a gas station and i'd see parents leave their kids in their car to run in the store to buy things and of course i'd watch the car just to be safe that no one would take their car or the kids since i was also trained to watch the outside of the store as well. and i'd go "you know you shouldn't leave your children in the car alone" and customers would go "oh it's okay, it's just a quick in and out of here" and i go "well in a bigger city it might be your kids life" she was a normal customer and since then she always brought her kids in with her and didn't leave her car running. i guess my advice worked
