Hooking up a separate equalizer.

I've got a good bit of experience hooking up amps, but I've never hooked up an equalizer. I haven't bought one yet. I'm thinking a 10-13 band. But all of them seem to be RCA output. I know I need to get power to it, ground it and run RCAs from the stereo output to the equalizer. But not sure what to do after that.

An equalizer in my understanding like this would be a preprocessor step from the Head Unit and before the amp(s).

Better to just get a head unit with a 13 band eq built in. Seperate eqs are very obsolete. The more things in your signal path, the more chances of noise along with wierd preout voltages.

Typical. Denigrate the equipment the OP (Original poster) has OR WANTS (added later) and be of NO use to the the OP.

Actually if you'd take the time to read the op he said he hasn't purchased one yet and was curious about the installation process but considering most head units nowadays have a 13 band eq it would be more efficient and possibly cheaper to go that route, thus making that advice potentially very useful to the op, but to each his own I suppose.

Genuinely curious, what does you spouting off your degrees and certifications have to do with the posts aimed in your direction?
Funny, when I was in a Jr College before I went to WashU we were talking about how when one gets a college degree it;s not all just about the academic material learned, and those without college degrees just don't understand the accomplishments in getting degrees. If you have one or many you know, Others who don't don't! And a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering pertains to car audio.

Indeed it could, but being a rn has very little if any relevance to car audio but that's the one I see the most. Even with your other degrees and certs, pertaining to car audio or not, why try to justify yourself to a bunch of strangers by bringing up your education unprovoked in some discussions.

Probably because he knows that he knows nothing about car audio, but is a petty, sorry excuse for a man and needs internet forums to make himself feel important and accomplished. So, he tries to use degrees and certifications as leverage, not knowing that he isn't the only person here who has studied engineering (amongst other things) at a technical university, and that some of us actually work daily in related fields.

It's what I do as my paid job. I work 34 hours a week, four evenings. I'm still up after Sun night/Mon AM!

Well, that was entertaining. An equalizer is cheaper. That's why I was inquiring about it. But since it's a better option to get the head unit with the equalizer built in, I'll save a little more. Is Clarions new stuff still good? And what about Alpine?
