hooking up a hard drive to a HU?

I'm in the market to buy a head unit, I want it to have a line out/in (whatever is used so that an ipod can be hooked up to it). but I was also wondering if its possible to put a HD in my car and hook it up to the head unit? So that someone can browse through thousands of songs right on the head unit? that would be awesome.

There are several USB HU's out there with mixed success. The best so far seem to be Pioneer and Kenwood. But for ultimate control over digital files (plus DVD, GPS, TV,...) go with a CarPC (MP3Car.com).
