Home made still

OK, so I told everyone I brewed my own beer, wine and mead right. Well since I couldn't work on my jeep due to the insane humidity here right now, I decided to try something. I was just sitting here in my apartment board as hell and thought i'd try to make a still out of stuff I just had laying around. So I took my of my one gallon pots I use for brewing, drilled a hole in the cover and inserted a 2" piece of copper tube. I took 20' coil of copper tube and wrapped it around a can of spray paint, to get nice tight vertical coil (the can of spray paint WAS removed). I connected the tube in the cover to the vertical coil (condenser) with a 4" piece of high temp hose. everything looked alright so I gave it a shot. I poured 3 bottles of my mead into the pot, put the cover on, and put the end of the coil into an empty wine bottle. I played around with the temp of the stove to keep the mead at a temp just before boiling. Alcohol boils at a much cooler temp than water. Now I have two bottles of crazy honey flavoured moonshine! Holy poop, this stuff is strong!

So once I got the idea in my head I did some research on moonshine and found out that the first little bit of alcohol that comes out of a still is ethanol and you should discard the first 1-2oz of the stuff. Well at least it is if you're using a corn mash to make it. I went ahead and did this anyways just to be safe.

So anyone else brew their own beer or try to make a still?

yes ive made shine and its the first 60 ml is basically laquer thinner

Seems we were both right somwewhat lol

" if distilled incorrectly the desired outcome is ethanol.. and if distilled at the wrong tempature the outcome is methanol aka methyl alchohol/ wood alchohol"
