Holy crap! WTF happened to my IDMAX ?????

Hey guys,

I had 2 brand new IDMAXs properly wired together and everything powered correctly.

I only got playing on this sub literally for 10 minutes, if that. There was no rips or tears on the cone at all. It was playing well, then starting making a sound. Then seized right up and stopped playing. I took it out of the box and this is what I found:

The coil was wrapped so tight around the basket that I had to pull to unwind all the coil.

Any ideas what happened? I dont think I put too much power to it. Im a little upset to say the least.

You dont' think you put too much power to it??

how about posting more info. Like type of box and size. what amp? where'd you buy from? your fault?

some of that coil looks dark/burnt..

I never understood why people want to over power subwoofers! They put power ratings on them for a f ucking reason. The power ratings give you the best performance for long term use. Of course if you put more power to them they will get louder. But you are over driving them and damaging the voice coils at the same time.

well, im not saying i wasnt at fault, probably was patially. i mean, if it was weak glue that had something to do with it then..

plus yeah it was BNIB from a dealer that sold it to me here in Canada but now they arent in biz. it was sitting in the closet for about a year coz i ordered it ahead of time so id have it ready when i returned back home from work

would the coil get that dark with only a few minutes of playing time?

i didnt have the gains way up either and bass boost was off. they were in a ported box with enough air space

i had the same thing happen to me with a r/f p2 took it to a shop they pushed on the sub it would barley move al locked up like they told me i had a low voltage surge.
yeah, mine locked up too.

now would the basket still be ok for a recone kit?

Somebody lied to you.

I overpower my subs to get the best performance out of them. The added head room alows for a cleaner unlcipped signal at the same power level of a smaller amp. The gains need to be set accordingly. Or just buy a better sub.
