HO Alt

I installed my HO Alt and I kept the stock wires from the original alt. I spliced the new alts wires to the old alts wires. The new wires are about 12 gauge, and the old wires are smaller than 18 gauge. Do I need to change the stock wiring? I talked to Dominick and he said keep them. I talked to a local shop and they said to change them. I have 4 gauge running from the battery positive to the alt power, and 4 gauge grounding the amp. What should I do?
