HO alt. versus alt winding

I had been doing searches on here for a few months before i got my system and this is my first post, so forgive me if this comes off as noobish:

I was wondering if there are and disadvantages to getting a stock alternator wound as opposed to buying a high output alternator. For example, would a wound alternator lose it's increased capabilities a lot faster than a h.o. alt? I am only running about 700 watts RMS, which will later be increased; though i don't plan to run more than 1000 in all likelihood. I used to only get dimming, but now it seems that my subs shut off a lot more frequently ( not only at high volumes ). If it helps you at all my car is a 1995 Chevy Lumina.

Thanks Moe. Assuming both could put out enough amps to handle the load which would you recommend?

- off of Soule in Pinegate... nice to see a fellow Liverpudlian (i hate that word though)

Thanks for your input guys. I think I am just going to wait a little longer and get an H.O. alt. In the meantime I'll just put my subs in 4 ohm mode so they draw less current.

There shouldn't be that much of a problem with a 700W RMS load on the electrical system.
Yeah I wouldn't have thought so either, but when in 2 ohm mode it will shut off before it gets very loud. Its a stock 100 amp alt, but i haven't upgraded the wiring at all yet. I'll just do that when i put the new one in.

have you done the big 3? i'm running 800w off of a 70A alt. and i don't have any problems. after i did the big 3 the dimming all but stopped.

I thought re-winding wasn't reccomended because the stock parts such as the bearings and fan could not handle the increased load for long? Cause if that's not the case I need to make a call...
You can re-wind almost any alt. Problem is that you generally can't rewind them up very high (the highest I could go with my GM 105A was 140A), it'll probably cost you as much as a higher-output H.O. alt (the rewinding to 140A was going to cost me $250 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif ), and when they rewind they generally don't upgrade all the components like a good quality H.O. alt would have.

x2 if you got the money just get a HO. all the bigger i could have mine wound was from 70A to 75A for $150. SCREW THAT!!
