I hear alot about frat guys not likeing the term 'frat', I honestly couldnt care less, a fraternity is little different than a sports team one would join, a bit of hazing, but lots of bonding along the way, creating an unmatched atmosphere. Also, frats arent just for a 'certain' type of person despite the stereotypes. I NEVER would have even thought to join one before coming to college, I had the same stereotypical views as most people (popped collared douches, drink 24/7, **** girls). I honestly just started coming out only for the booze and women, until I got to know the people and appreciate the community involvement and realize most stereotypes are bs... I see more non frat guys with those stereotypes than frat guys around here.
It's just a simple form of respect. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "You don't call your country your '****,' do you?" There are a lot of fraternities that deserve to be called frats, but as I said before, if you (or they) really understood what a fraternity was, you wouldn't call it one.
