Hi-pass for 3.5's

One of the 3.5" Kappa's in my dash is playing fuzzy. Musta not liked that Kid Rock CD I put in :p

I run them off the front channels of the HU. I figured that with 150 Hz bass blockers they'd survive HU power no sweat, seeing as they're rated 35 wrms. Guess not...

The speakers mount up on the dash and point at the windshield. I like them because they help raise the sound stage. Unfortunately nothing bigger will fit (I had to modify the opennings just to fit the Kappa magnets in there).

Anyway, I'm gonna replace them with either JL's or Boston Acoustics just to try something different. What would you guys recommend for bass blocker frequency? I don't wanna blow them again but I want them to be useful too, not just tweeters.

150Hz for the Kappa 3.5" should work fine. I'll bet it's not the bass

that killed them. I bet it's the distorted H/U power that blew them.

It's not clean power. Distortion at any freq can damage speakers.

How high do you turn your Pioneer 6400 volume up to?

I have a 7400 and when I had it running speakers there was

distortion starting when the volume was around 45.

You might want to get a small amp to power your 3.5" speakers.

Get an amp that has an adjustable HP filter so you can get rid of

those passive bass-blockers.

You'll like the sound better and the amps clean power won't damage

your speakers.

I've looked at the output of my 7400 with a 'scope, and you're right... the waveform clips at 45-46 volume setting. Up to that point it's very clean, and I never bring it up higher than that.

I have played some songs with a bass drum thump that make these little Kappas twitch though. I thought maybe that's what hurt them. Was thinkin' going to 300 Hz instead.
