Well.... I'd like to upgrade my amp....Let me explain what all I have....

Currently I have a JL 450/4 amp --- it pushes 2 Focal K2P 6.5 components in the front and 2 Focal Utopia 5.25 components in the rear.

I also have a JL 250/1 pushing 1 JL sub for a little bass....

The 250/1 is fine for me... I'm not a big bass guy and the little fill from the single sub I'm happy with.

So -- on to the main amp..... The 450/4 is okay I guess.... The front stage is 150X2 and the rear is 75X2 ---- I'd like a little more from the rear stage to really wake those Utopias up.......

Here's the dilema --- I've had my eye on a McIntosh Mcc404 (4 channel X 100)....

Is this really going to be an improvement over the JL? It would help the rear stage power but decrease the front --- or would it?

Is there something better out there to upgrade to? With selling my JL 450/4 I'll have $1000 to spend ---- OR just stick with the setup I have?

Thanks for any advice...

I really think the setup you have is ok. It typically sounds better( more natural) to have no rear fill, so having more sound up front really is not a problem, unless you don't like it. If you feel that you would like louder rear fill then go for it, however adding 25% more power will not make your speakers 25% Louder.

The MCC404 is either 100x4 or 400x2. You could also do 100x2 + 400x1; each set of channels that you bridge produces 400 watts, but the THD still stays at .005%. Just from what I've read nferra has the right idea. Scrap the rear fill and put the power to the fronts. Another option is to put 100x2 to the fronts and 400 to the sub. Mcintosh also makes a control knob for MCC amps that plugs into the amp to adjust the sub level +/- 12db. The model # is R1163. Good luck.
