casue as far as performance per dollar, there untoichable. the CD5000 has 8 volt pre outs, find me a deck under $400 that has that!

doesn't 8 volt pre-outs limit your amplifier choices? I've seen amps say maximum input signal of 6.5 volts, etc... Just wondering.

Show me one example where you would have to have 8volt outputs as opposed to 5 volts. There really isn't much of a difference between 5 and 8 volts when it comes to real world situations. There is a reason why the Eclipse CD-7000 only has 5 volt outputs, its because it doesn't really need them as 5 volts are sufficient. Pioneer Premier head units changed from 6.5 volt outputs to 5 volts as well because 5 is good enough. So with that being said the 880 is much better performance per dollar deck than the 5000. I'm far from an expert on this subject but do deal with math and comparisons on a daily basis.

Going from 5 to 8 is a 60% increase ( (8-5)/5 ). Going from 2 to 5 is a 150% increase ( (5-2)/2 ), so the 2 comparisons are not the same.

I can't say how significant the 8v is to the 5V output ( Eclipse went with 5 V on thier higher end head unit versus the 8 of the 5000 ). Certainly it would affect the amount of gain needed on the amp to a degree but not nearly as signficantly as the 2 versus 5 argument. Others here are better equipped to answer that question.

But, in this case you cannot compare the voltage difference in absolute ( ie 3 volts ) terms but rather must view it in relative terms, as in a % change.

Actually its much different like the poster above stated. I think everyone on the forum will agree that 5 volts is more than adequate. Where as 2 volt outputs don't get the same nod. So to go from 2 to 5 is a much bigger difference than going from 5 to 8. Not to mention there are some amps that can't even handle an 8 volt input. On the flipside MOST amps can handle 5 volts. besides that, doesnt the 880 have a VERY nice eq? thinkin of replacing my 860 with that... worthy trade?

880, and 780 are both very nice units. If you plan on running an active setup, go with the 880, if not the 780 has a really nice color screen that gives it a slight edge in appearance imho.
