Head Unit Cutting Out?

I have a Kenwood Excelon X-689 head unit, running my front door speakers and subwoofer off a 4 channel amp, using the front and sub pre-outs. When playing music with a lot of bass, if the bass control on the h/u is turned up all the way and the volume is turned up past about 30/35, it will cut out and stop playing for a second, then continue. It does not turn off, it just freezes for a second or two, and if you turn the volume or subwoofer level down, it doesn't cut out. My gains on the amp were set with a DMM, and the amp is fed by 1/0 wire, my alt is fine, etc... Do I need to run a larger power wire to the h/u? This is the only thing I can think of that might cause this to happen. Thanks in advance for any help.

I just fixed that problem on my mustang. When i turned the radio up it would freeze and cut out. Also if I tried to roll both windows up at the same time the radio would do that too. I checked everything 3 times before I decided to change the ends on the battery cables. Once i changed the ends everything worked fine.

I set the gains with the bass at 6/8, the subwoofer at 9/15, and the volume at 30/35. I have read that you should set the gains with the settings you normally use, and with 3/4 volume and bass, subwoofer etc at 0. Should I reset my gains exactly as the JL tutorial says, or with the settings I normally use? I don't think my battery cables are the problem, they look fine to me, batteries are in good shape, and I have dual batts, alternator is working well also. I was just thinking I might need a larger power and ground wire to it due to running everything off the pre-outs? Thanks.

Alright I guess I need to try resetting my gains with the volume at a lower level, my gains are hardly turned up at all now. It's not my subwoofer causing the deck to skip, it doesn't do it with the bass hits, just when it is turned up loud and with the subwoofer contol maxxed. Thanks for the replies so far, I will try resetting the gains at a lower volume and see if that helps at all.

The problem may be that your gains are not turned up hardly at all. If your gains were turned up a little more you wouldn't have to turn the volume on your deck up as much. If it fixes your problem it's free as opposed to buying parts you may not need. Worth a shot before you start spending.
