head unit cuts out

I need some help I have a pioneer deh-17 head unit it's about 8 years old I use it outdoors on trips it is hooked to a deep cycle battery power wire and acc are hooked to pos and ground is hooked to neg now my problem if I'm running it without an amp from the speaker wires on the back after about volume 18 it starts cutting out then if you go up more it will power off then back on and keep doing this til you turn it down but if it is hooked to an amp it works fine what could my problem be?

Sounds like the speakers you're using are too much load for the HU amplifiers, or you have a short in the speakers somewhere.
