Head unit blown?

Hello. I'm having an issue with the audio on my 2003 H2. All audio from my speakers (AM/FM and CDs) comes out distorted under heavy static. This happened out of nowhere and the volume was low at the time. My thought is that the factory GM 6 disk head unit made by Delco needs to be replaced. The truck also has an internal amp tied to the Bose system but I think that I would be getting no sound at all if that went out.

I would much rather buy a new head unit, install it myself, and then take it to the dealership to have them reprogram the new unit rather than paying for them to do everything, but I just wanted to see if my diagnosis and plan gives me a good chance to solve the problem before I begin. Any input/expertise would be much appreciated. Thanks.
